Second Chances in Action: Teen Court Program Secures Continued Support
May 11, 2026 // South Dakota Fund Grants
Rooted in one of the first Scout troops west of the Mississippi, the Scouting America, Sioux Council (SASC) gives youth a second chance through its Teen Court program. With the support of a $15,000 South Dakota Fund grant awarded by South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF), SASC will continue to deliver restorative, youth-led justice across South Dakota.
Teen Court is a program that allows first-time, non-violent juvenile offenders an alternative to formal court involvement. Participants are recommended by the State’s Attorney office and judged by a peer jury. The jury hands out constructive sentences such as requirements for community service and participation in educational classes and substance-use assessments. Through this process, jurors gain leadership skills and exposure to legal careers, while offenders are given a true second chance.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn from their actions and make better choices,” said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “Programs like Teen Court create space for accountability, growth, and second chances, and we’re proud to support that work.”
The program helps reduce demand on the local justice system while fostering responsibility and accountability among youth, contributing to lower rates of repeat offenses.
SDCF’s South Dakota Fund grants approximately $1 million each year to nonprofit organizations across the state. The grants are focused in nine areas and serve to build stronger families and communities.
SDCF is a public non-profit organization established in 1987. SDCF administers over 1,300 funds benefiting hundreds of charitable organizations across the state. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the foundation distributed over $40 million in grants in 2025. To learn more, visit https://sdcommunityfoundation.org/giving or call 800.888.1842.
