Salvation Army of Brookings Receives $20,000 Grant from South Dakota Community Foundation

The Salvation Army of Brookings has received a $20,000 South Dakota Fund grant from South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) to help meet growing community needs related to housing insecurity. With requests for rent and temporary shelter assistance on the rise, this funding will allow the organization to significantly expand its reach.
“In recent months, we’ve only been able to meet about 25% of the need in our community,” said Hunter Harvey, Service Center Administrator. “This grant gives us the ability to help double the number of individuals and families, keeping them housed and safe while preventing further crisis.”
In addition to emergency financial assistance, The Salvation Army offers case management services to help clients build long-term stability. By providing both immediate support and ongoing guidance, the organization works to break the cycle of homelessness and hardship.
“It’s far easier to keep someone housed than to help them start over after losing everything,” Harvey added. “This funding allows us to intervene early, provide temporary housing when needed, and stabilize lives before things spiral further.”
Ginger Neimann, Senior Program Officer for SDCF, emphasized the importance of supporting programs like this at the local level. “The Salvation Army is meeting a critical need in Brookings,” said Neimann. “We’re proud to support their work to provide stability, dignity, and hope to those facing difficult times.”
The Salvation Army has served the Brookings area since 1927, with a mission to meet basic human needs without discrimination. The organization’s work is rooted in compassion, dignity, and the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
