A Legacy of Giving: Where History Rides On

July 7, 2026 // Donors

One of the most well-known riders of her time, Mattie Goff Newcombe, defied the odds, setting a new standard for generations of women in trick riding. Her passion and love for rodeo cemented her place in both the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame and the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

But Mattie’s legacy didn’t stop there. In 1995 she chose to leave a portion of her estate, including her family’s working ranch, to South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF).

“She left real assets—a ranch in western South Dakota that benefited SDCF with the intent that part of those assets would be used to build the building which is now the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center and Mattie Goff Newcombe Convention Center,” said Stephanie Judson, SDCF President & CEO.

Her generosity ensures that the legacy of rodeo and ranching remains part of South Dakota’s history. Her unforgettable story, along with many other champions, lives on inside the walls of The Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center.
