NEW Podcast: Planning for A Legacy with Trudy Morgan and Stephanie Judson

South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) has awarded a $2,500 South Dakota Fund grant to Northern Hills Alcohol and Drug Services, DBA Compass Point, to support the development of its new “Living in Balance” program—an initiative that integrates physical fitness and wellness into substance use recovery.

Through a partnership with Flex Fit, Compass Point clients will take part in a six-week program combining strength training, nutrition education, and wellness coaching. Each session includes one hour of exercise with proper technique training, followed by one hour focused on health, wellness, and lifestyle changes.

“These groups are desperately needed for the area and populations we serve,” said Donna Morgan, Patient Care Coordinator at Compass Point. “The Living in Balance program will also include a Health and Wellness portion to teach better health alternatives and exercise.”

Upon completion, clients will be recognized as CrossFit trainers and will receive lifetime access to gym services and group fitness classes at no cost—an estimated value of $6,000 per person.

“This group has a significant impact on clients to help them make better choices throughout their life of recovery,” added Morgan.

Compass Point has also launched Men in Recovery and Women in Recovery group sessions and plans to expand offerings with new Life Skills and Critical Thinking programs.

“Compass Point is leading a thoughtful and innovative approach to long-term recovery,” said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “We’re proud to support their commitment to treating the whole person—mind and body.”
