Marshall County Healthcare Center Awarded $50,000
February 3, 2026 // Beyond Idea Grants
Marshall County Healthcare Center (MCHC) recently received $50,000 from South Dakota Community Foundation’s (SDCF) Beyond Idea Grant (BIG) to develop and test the viability of a mobile care clinic that would provide family practice care closer to home to underserved patients in rural Marshall County. Offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, the BIG program supports community-based problem-solving efforts in South Dakota.
“Marshall County Healthcare Center Avera’s leadership team is always seeking creative new ways to provide quality care close to home,” said Nick Fosness, MCHC’s CEO. “A mobile care clinic to serve surrounding communities fits our mission and vision. We are eager to find out if there is a demand in our markets and where the service is financially viable. South Dakota Community Foundation’s Beyond Idea Grant will give us the opportunity to gather data and community input to determine if a mobile health clinic would be beneficial and sustainable.”
Located in Britton, MCHC is the only healthcare facility in Marshall County. With more than 4,300 residents in Marshall County, that means more than 75 percent live more than 15 miles from Britton. With the creation of a mobile care clinic, MCHC will offer residents consistent access to quality healthcare services. The mobile clinic will focus on preventive care, health education and routine wellness visits. With this approach, serious health conditions should be detected earlier and chronic conditions better-managed, resulting in improved health outcomes.
"A mobile healthcare clinic offers the opportunity for MCHC to reach much of the population of Marshall County and to provide much needed services," said Ginger Niemann, SDCF’s Senior Program Officer. “SDCF is proud to support MCHC as they develop and test the feasibility of this project.”
