Brookings Regional Humane Society Reaches Fundraising Goal, Resulting in Additional Support

February 3, 2026 // Nonprofit Savings Accounts

Brookings Regional Humane Society (BRHS) recently reached its goal of raising $80,000 to establish an endowment fund with South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). With that milestone achieved, SDCF provided the organization with an additional $20,000 under its Nonprofit Savings Account (NSA) Challenge Grants program.

“This program provides a great avenue to help local nonprofits build a base of financial stability,” said SDCF’s Director of Development Jeff Veltkamp. “We’re proud to support BRHS’s work to improve the lives of their companion animals and the families they join.”

Under the NSA Challenge Grants program, SDCF provides $1 for every $4 raised, up to $20,000. Nonprofits must meet certain requirements to be eligible to apply, and the fundraising must be completed within a two-year period.

"We are so proud to take this monumental step forward with the South Dakota Community Foundation. This partnership ensures secure and reliable financial stability for the Brookings Humane Society, allowing us to continue serving our community well into the future,” said BRHS Executive Director Maia Moore.

Since 1988, BRHS has provided a safe haven for dogs, cats and other small companion animals while they await their new homes. The nonprofit is funded through donations and run by dedicated volunteers. The organization typically touches the lives of 500-600 animals each year, not to mention their newly found best friends.
