Breaking Down Barriers to Childcare in Rapid City

Families in Rapid City will have an expanded childcare option, thanks to the work of Rural America Initiatives, the longest operating American Indian private nonprofit serving Native families in Rapid City. With a $49,955 South Dakota Fund grant from South Dakota Community Foundation, RAI is taking its commitment to child well-being one step further.

The grant will assist with a trial fee-based childcare center project currently under development that will provide full care for children ages 3 to 5, in accordance with South Dakota state standards.

In the Rapid City area, access to childcare is a much-needed resource. In fact, RAI conducted surveys in three Native communities and found that 95 percent of American Indian primary caretakers are prevented from employment due to a lack of childcare.

“Rural America Initiatives is grateful to South Dakota Community Foundation for this generous investment in the Wakháŋyeža Child Care Center,” said Robert Yellowhawk, RAI Executive Director. “This support will help us prepare to serve children beginning this fall at our 612 Crazy Horse Street location. With no income requirement to apply, the center will expand access to quality childcare for families throughout our community while creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn and thrive.” 

RAI plans to serve at least 45 children in this program. Programming in the childcare center will include cultural activities, outdoor and active play, and skill-building in fine motor, cognitive, social-emotional, language and creative development. This approach will work to connect children to their indigenous culture while giving primary caretakers the peace of mind to return to or find employment.
