In 1998, a group of committed leaders partnered with the city of Spearfish to create a long-term asset for the benefit of Spearfish nonprofit groups and organizations.

The Spearfish Community Foundation has distributed over $500,000 to nonprofit groups and organizations since 1997. As the Spearfish Community Foundation funds grow, so will the amount available each year for nonprofit projects and programs.

The State of South Dakota received a settlement from Phoenix-based Banner Health for its 2002 sale of seven hospitals and nursing homes. Banner Health made cash payment to the State that was imediately endowed at the South Dakota Community Foundation for health and elderly care in the communities in which Banner Health served. Each year, the Spearfish Community Foundation board of directors has the ability to recommend grants from this fund.
