Planning for a Legacy: Trudy Morgan and Stephanie Judson

Across South Dakota, there are people quietly shaping the future, helping others dream bigger, give more and leave a mark that lasts for generations. Among them are the members of South Dakota Community Foundation’s (SDCF) Key Club: professional advisors who not only guide their clients through important financial decisions but also open the door to lasting philanthropy.
These trusted partners work with SDCF to transform personal passions into legacies that strengthen communities statewide.
SDCF Director of Development, Jeff Veltkamp, sat down with SDCF President & CEO, Stephanie Judson, and Key Club member, Trudy Morgan, attorney with Morgan Theeler LLP in Mitchell. Together, they discussed the importance of planned giving vehicles and how they can be used to create a lasting impact.
With years of experience guiding clients through important financial and estate decisions, Trudy has seen firsthand how planned giving can be effective; not just for organizations, but for the donors themselves.
“One of the remarkable things about collaborating with advisors like you is that we can help people make an impact that lives on for generations.”

“Planned giving allows people to align their resources with their values,” Trudy shared. “It’s not only about leaving a gift; it’s about making sure that gift reflects what’s most important to you and your family.”
Stephanie and Trudy discussed several planned giving options, such as charitable gift annuities, donor-advised funds and bequests. These tools can be flexible and tailored to each donor’s circumstances. Trudy noted planned giving can also provide tax benefits, create income for the donor during their lifetime and ensure charitable passions are supported far into the future.

When asked how professional advisors can introduce the topic of philanthropy with clients, Trudy stressed the importance of listening. “The conversation often starts with understanding what matters most to them, learning what causes they’ve supported and experiences that have shaped their lives. From there, we can explore how their estate plan can carry that forward.”
Stephanie agreed, adding, “One of the remarkable things about collaborating with advisors like you is that we can help people make an impact that lives on for generations. The combination of personal passion, professional expertise and the flexibility of SDCF’s giving options really makes anything possible.”
For Trudy, being part of the Key Club is more than professional recognition. It’s about being a part of a network of people dedicated to strengthening South Dakota communities. “It’s rewarding to see clients realize they can make a difference right here at home. Often, they didn’t even know how many ways there were to give.”
