Flandreau Sports Association Receives Grant to Equip Youth Recreation Center
April 1, 2026 // South Dakota Fund GrantsThe Flandreau Sports Association (FSA) has been awarded a $10,000 grant from South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the organization's new, indoor youth recreation and community fitness center, currently under construction.
“The Flandreau community had an idea: to create a recreational space, in their own backyard, for area youth and residents of all ages to enjoy,” said Ginger Niemann, SDCF’s Senior Program Officer. “We’re pleased to be able to support that dream with a South Dakota Fund grant that will help to furnish the new space.”
According to Niemann, the grant will fund two batting cage nets and their accompanying rail systems, additional netting around the turf area, and two soccer goals.
”The Flandreau Sports Association is extremely grateful for the contribution from South Dakota Community Foundation. Their support for this project will help provide a space our entire town can benefit from and enjoy," said Bret Severtson, Flandreau Sports Association.
The idea for the facility was born roughly 16 months ago, when a group of community members began exploring ways to bring an indoor recreation space to Flandreau. FSA started collecting donation commitments in 2025 and purchased 5.5-acres of land in the heart of Flandreau. The facility is on track for completion in mid-May.
The new facility will offer programming in baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and wrestling, along with space for community gatherings and events. It will also include a community fitness center. With its central location, the facility will be easily accessible – eliminating the need to travel to surrounding communities to participate in these activities.
SDCF is a public non-profit organization established in 1987. SDCF administers over 1,300 funds benefiting hundreds of charitable organizations across the state. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the foundation distributed over $40 million in grants in 2025. To learn more, visit https://sdcommunityfoundation.org/giving or call 800.888.1842.
