Baltic Community Garden to Build Outdoor Classroom with Support from SDCF Grant
June 16, 2025 // Grants, South Dakota Fund Grants

Pierre, S.D. – South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $2,000 South Dakota Fund grant to Baltic Community Garden. Funding will support the construction of a new outdoor classroom, helping the garden expand its mission to provide healthy food and foster community through education and shared service.
Baltic Community Garden, a cherished community space in Baltic, has two central goals: to provide healthy food at no cost to local families and to bring people together through service and fellowship. The addition of an outdoor classroom will further these goals by offering a dedicated space for education, collaboration, and hands-on learning.
“Baltic Community Garden is pleased to accept a grant from SD Community Fund to aid in the building of our new outdoor classroom,” said Sallie Franchuk. “This outdoor classroom will provide an educational space for teachers, students, organizations, clubs, and more to have classes and host projects in a beautiful outdoor space. Our garden seeks to provide healthy food free of charge, and to provide service opportunities to build up our community. Being able to educate in these areas is crucial to the realization of these goals. The outdoor classroom will provide the space needed to engage our youth and others to educate in these, and many other ways. Without the support of grantors like SD Community Fund this project would not be possible.”
“This project is about more than just gardening,” said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer at South Dakota Community Foundation. “It’s about creating a place where people connect, learn, and grow together. We’re honored to play a small part in making that possible.”
