The Menno-Olivet Community Foundation was started in 2023 to provide financial support to charitable and nonprofit purposes in the Menno and Olivet community at the recommendation of a local advisory council. In September 2023, South Dakota Community Foundation challenged the communities to raise $200,000 by October 2026 in order to receive $50,000 in matching funds.

The Menno-Olivet Foundation is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity dedicated to strengthening and sustaining the Menno-Olivet community for generations to come.

The Foundation serves as a “community savings account” for Menno-Olivet — a permanent source of support designed to protect what makes our community special while investing in its future. It exists to ensure that charitable dollars given in Menno and Olivet continue working right here at home, supporting local projects, organizations, and opportunities that improve quality of life for everyone.

The Menno-Olivet Foundation operates separately from local development corporations and other nonprofit entities. Its role is distinct. The Foundation provides a structured and lasting way for individuals, families, alumni, and friends to reinvest in their community through a permanent endowment.

All types of gifts are welcome. Donations may be made in honor of a birthday or anniversary, or in memory of a loved one. Honored individuals or families receive notification, and donors receive documentation for charitable gift purposes. Larger gifts, including estate or planned gifts, are also encouraged and can create a lasting legacy for the community.

The Menno-Olivet Foundation partners with the South Dakota Community Foundation for professional investment management. All gifts are invested into a permanent endowment fund.

The principal of the fund is never spent. Instead, it is invested to generate earnings over time. A portion of those earnings is distributed each year as grants to nonprofit organizations and community projects serving the Menno-Olivet area.

Because only earnings are granted — not the principal — the fund continues to grow and provide support indefinitely. As the endowment grows, so does the amount available for community grants. This ensures that today’s generosity continues to benefit Menno-Olivet far into the future.

Gifts may be made during your lifetime or through your will or estate plan. Donations may be given in your name or anonymously.

Common gift types include:

  • Cash
  • Stock or appreciated securities
  • Life insurance
  • Real estate
  • Trusts and charitable gift annuities

After making a gift, donors receive regular updates on the fund’s growth and impact.

A gift to the Menno-Olivet Foundation creates a lasting legacy that strengthens the community for future generations. Contributions may also provide income and estate tax benefits as allowed by law.

Most importantly, giving through the Foundation ensures that your generosity stays local — supporting the projects, programs, and people that make Menno-Olivet home.
