The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) presented a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Rosebud. Funds will provide partial support for upgrading to a newer vehicle with all-weather tires.
“At the Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud we are always looking for enriching and educational opportunities for our Club members throughout the state of South Dakota”, said Glen Marshall, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud. “Whether they are exploring the Discovery Center, playing at Storybook Island, or seeing the Christmas tree display at the South Dakota Capitol, we work hard to provide experiences our youth might not have at home or school. Transportation can be a real challenge in a remote, rural community like ours. Without a ride, kids are not able to access the healthy meals, academic support, and enriching programming that our staff works hard to provide. This generous support from the South Dakota Community Foundation will combine with local donations to enable us to move ahead with the purchase of a safe, modern vehicle to transport youth for many years to come. Thank you so much.”
The Boys and Girls Club of Rosebud has come a long way in a relatively short period of time. They reopened their doors in 2014, added a teen center in 2017 and recently expanded their services to include the community of Parmelee. The community has embraced the program and they have a daily attendance of 25 to 30 youth. Many of the rural Club members live outside the town of Mission or in the neighboring communities of He Dog and Upper Cut Meat. The route to drop off youth is 55 miles every night.
“The South Dakota Community Foundation is proud to partner with the Boys and Girls Club as they provide innovative and supplemental activities for their area youth”, said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “As we all know, South Dakota’s weather can be challenging at times. Safe, reliable transportation is not a luxury. It is a necessity.”
