Take It Outdoors

August 31, 2021 // South Dakota Fund Grants

The Park has played a bigger role in town for a safe, outdoor space during the pandemic.

– During the COVID-19 pandemic, residents of Pierpont wanted to add additional healthy outdoor exercise to their daily routines while they maintained social distancing. Residents had several proposed projects in the works including the installation of two permanent bean bag areas for activity and tournaments. Equipment was upgraded and installed by volunteers.

Pierpont Supporter Funds received a $5,000 grant through the South Dakota Community Foundation’s (SDCF) South Dakota Fund grant program. Funds supported park improvements and upgrades.

“The Pierpont Supporter Fund appreciates the South Dakota Community Foundation grant to assist us with the addition of cement bean bag boards to offer an additional outside activity for families at the Park In Pierpont,” said Audrey Johnson, Town of Pierpont Chairman and National Community Leadership Institute team member. The Park has played a bigger role in town for a safe, outdoor space during the pandemic. We are lucky to have volunteers to assist with fundraising and installation. Thank you again for making this addition to our park, we look forward to hours of fun!”

“The great outdoors provided a welcome respite while sheltering in place during the pandemic”, said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “Physical activity not only provided the opportunity to strengthen our bodies; but provided added benefits for our mental health.”

In the early spring of 2020 through May 2021, the South Dakota Fund grant program along with the Community Innovation Grant (CIG) program, in partnership with the Bush Foundation, were reprioritized to focus solely on the Coronavirus and its impact on our state. Grants were distributed to charitable and nonprofit organizations across South Dakota.
