Supporting Our State's Youngest Citizens

Supporting Citizens

The pandemic has wreaked havoc on our state’s daycare providers. Oftentimes, children cannot attend while quarantining. Additional expenses have been incurred as the result of required health and safety needs. Low ratios must be maintained to reduce exposure. All this while still meeting daily expenses and providing quality care.

The Little Lions’ Learning Center is a non-profit daycare center located in Big Stone City. The Center provides childcare to children six weeks to five years of age in Grant County emphasizing social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. They currently serve approximately thirty children and employ six full-time staff. They were recently awarded a $5,000 South Dakota Fund grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). Funds will provide partial support for an additional staff member that will address health requirements.

“We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to receive a grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation,” said Anne Lester, OST/Daycare Director, Little Lions’ Learning Center. “The COVID grant funds will be used to offset some of the costs that the Little Lions’ Learning Center has incurred due to the pandemic.”

“Safe, reliable daycare is a huge asset for our state’s small communities,” said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “Local economies are dependent on this service being provided for their workers. We are proud to lend our support.”

In response to the pandemic, SDCF’s Board of Directors established the Coronavirus Response Fund to directly support the needs of communities and nonprofits affected by COVID-19. This fund addresses immediate needs including access to food, shortage of volunteers, healthcare sector support and human services sector support. Donations are being accepted. If you would like to lend your support to those who continue to be impacted by this virus, or just learn more, please visit sdcommunityfoundation.org. Donations can be made on-line or checks may be directed to SDCF, PO Box 296, Pierre, SD 57501. One hundred percent of donations made to the SDCF Coronavirus Fund go directly to those in need throughout our state.
