Shelter From the Storm

February 23, 2022 // Grants, South Dakota Fund Grants

This generous grant will positively impact hundreds of families across South Dakota, and we are so thankful for the Foundation’s support.

Jessica Arend, Development Director, RMHC

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is designed to execute two outcomes: hope and healing. This nonprofit is a temporary home away from home, which serves more than 1,000 families every single year and has played host to families from each of South Dakota’s 66 counties. Situated just steps from both Avera and Sanford Hospitals in Sioux Falls, Ronald McDonald House Charities offers families of a hospitalized child a room at a moment’s notice. Families are referred to RMHC by hospital social workers.

The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded Ronald McDonald House Charities an $18,000 South Dakota Fund grant that was used to upgrade security systems at their facility.

“The Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota strives each and every day to provide a healthy, caring, and comfortable place for families to find rest and reprieve while their child receives important medical care”, stated Jessica Arend, Development Director, RMHC. “Equally important is the safety that our houses offer families. This grant received from the South Dakota Community Foundation will allow us to upgrade the entire camera and lock system at our Lake Avenue House, bringing the need to be current with all security measures to reality. This generous grant will positively impact hundreds of families across South Dakota, and we are so thankful for the Foundation’s support.”

“We are proud to partner with Ronald McDonald House Charities to support their efforts to ensure their facilities are safe”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “Families with a sick child have enough to worry about. Finding a safe place to stay should not be one of them.”
