Rural and frontier communities rely on volunteers. We owe it to those that protect us to protect them!

Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF

The Warner Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) serves four townships near the rural area of Warner, SD. All members are volunteers comprised mostly of farmers, teachers, and bankers in the area. Established forty years ago, there was a need to recruit new members. The response was overwhelming and resulted in the department nearly doubling in size. The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded the WVFD $10,000 to partially support the purchase of updated gear for their new members.

“This grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation will assist the Warner Volunteer Fire Department to purchase new gear for our volunteers to better serve our community and surrounding area”, declared Amy Haselhorst, volunteer, Warner Volunteer Fire Department. “This will go a long way to ensure the safety of our volunteers, community members, and citizens that pass through our area.”

Like many rural fire departments, costs are covered through yearly fundraisers and community donations. This past year, they were unable to have their annual fundraisers due to the pandemic.

“We are pleased to partner with the Warner Volunteer Fire Department to support their efforts to outfit their new members up to code”, stated Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “Rural and frontier communities rely on volunteers. We owe it to those that protect us to protect them!”
