The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) presented a $10,000 Community Innovation Grant (CIG) to Helping with Horsepower. Offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, the Community Innovation Grant program supports efforts to find breakthrough solutions to community challenges across the state. The grant will support a program that partners girls from the Abbott House and other “at risk” individuals with riders that have physical disabilities or special needs.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of the South Dakota Community Foundation, said Crystal Young, Program Director, Helping with Horsepower. “We have had the opportunity to work with wonderful organizations in our community, and with this grant we intend to further develop our program to bring these groups together for even greater impact! Thank you so much for helping us to help others through Helping with Horsepower!”

Located in Mitchell, the mission of Helping with Horsepower at Reclamation-Ranch is to assist individuals with special needs and at-risk youth in achieving their goals and full potential through interactions with horses.

“The South Dakota Community Foundation is pleased to partner with Helping with Horsepower as they provide opportunities for individuals to support, encourage and help one another”, said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “Compassion and understanding grows as relationships are built.”

A total of $400,000 will be available to nonprofits in 2020 through the Community Innovation Grant program. The final round for 2019 has just been completed with successful applicants announced at the end of December.
