Making a Splash!November 10, 2021 // South Dakota Fund Grants
“It is this collaboration of local fundraising and grant writing that really makes a project like this possible.”Megan Smith, Burke Splash Pad Committee Member
The Burke Splash Pad Committee is a group of local volunteers that formed in the summer of 2021 through a shared vision of offering water play for local families. The committee’s mission is to re-imagine and improve Burke’s park to be more accessible, safe, fun, and connected to the rest of the community. The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) provided a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to the Burke Splash Pad Committee to provide partial support for Phase One of the plan for their park space.
"We are proud that leaders in healthy community development saw how special this project was, supporting us right away”, declared Megan Smith, Burke Splash Pad Committee Member. “The South Dakota Community Foundation is a big part of what took the project across the finish line, making it possible to meet all the commitments we needed to in a timely manner. It is this collaboration of local fundraising and grant writing that really makes a project like this possible."
Phase One involves removal of older concrete, bringing water line to and from the area, burying power lines and installing the splash pad concrete and features.
“We are proud to partner with the Burke Splash Pad Committee to support their efforts to increase access to and inclusion in outdoor recreation in Burke”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “Every age group in their community will benefit from these improvements.”
