“While the pandemic effected everyone’s lifestyle, our state’s senior citizens have spent precious time away from loved ones and friends”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF.

The Spearfish Senior Center is committed to providing recreational, social, and educational opportunities for not only seniors but their entire community. The Center was closed for over one year due to COVID-19 concerns and just re-opened in April 2021. The Center suffered a loss of income due to the necessitated closure and having to cancel their traditional fundraisers. Their building also suffered some water damage during the closure.

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) was pleased to provide a $4,271 South Dakota Fund grant to the Center. This grant will support the costs of adding an additional cleaning day a week to be done by a professional cleaner and purchasing cleaning supplies to comply with CDC recommendations.

“With COVID-19 still a major concern for our organization, we have increased cleaning and sanitizing throughout our facility”, said Stephanie Crago, Executive Director, Spearfish Senior Center. “Reducing the risk of exposure to the virus by disinfecting is an important part of safely opening our Senior Center to activities. We appreciate the South Dakota Community Foundation’s support in our mission of keeping the Spearfish Senior Center active and thriving in our community.”

“While the pandemic effected everyone’s lifestyle, our state’s senior citizens have spent precious time away from loved ones and friends”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “We are so pleased to be able to play a small part in their return to normal. Socialization plays a vital role in keeping all of us active, healthy and happy.”
