The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) was pleased to partner with Makoce Agriculture Development. SDCF awarded them with a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant. Funds provided partial support for their Cultural Food Storage and Education program.
“The funding support from South Dakota Community Foundation will ensure the necessary program related items are in place prior to construction of a local and community accessible cultural food storage and processing building,” said Nick Hernandez, Oglala Lakota Founder/President/CEO, Makoce Agriculture Development. “This will result in creating access and opportunities through local and cultural foods.”
Located on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Makoce Agriculture Development is a Lakota led community-based organization using place-based solutions and strategies to develop Indigenous agriculture and food systems designed to regenerate equitable healthy communities, and environment.
“This program will provide a clean, safe, and sanitary space for the harvesting, processing, and storage of local, cultural, and traditional foods,” stated Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “It will enhance economic outcomes for local Pine Ridge Reservation food producers; and we are proud to play a small role in its development.”
