Going to Extremes!

October 20, 2021 // South Dakota Fund Grants

Having this type of rig in our area would not have been possible without the help of the South Dakota Community Foundation.

Emergencies and critical infrastructure breakdowns oftentimes result in the need for extreme, off-road capabilities. Brown County Emergency Management sought a solution to these challenges and saw great potential in the “Fat Truck”. The “Fat Truck” is a special off-road utility rescue rig capable of going over any terrain. The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) provided a $15,000 South Dakota Fund grant to Brown County Emergency Management to provide partial support for the purchase of this vehicle.

"In 2019, Brown County and Northeast South Dakota partners began a project to obtain a rescue rig that would work in all types of situations and conditions”, stated Scott A. Meints, Director, Brown County Emergency Management. “Having this type of rig in our area would not have been possible without the help of the South Dakota Community Foundation."

Brown County Emergency Management, in partnership with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and ten Northeast South Dakota counties, worked towards purchasing a “Fat Truck” for emergency use. The rig will be used for life safety as well as critical infrastructure emergencies. This one vehicle has the capability to operate in snow, mud, water, ice or nearly any obstacle that comes its way. It will result in saving time and money, while reducing the risk to rescuers and victims.

“We are proud to partner with Brown County Emergency Management to bring this much needed equipment to their region”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “We all know South Dakota’s weather and terrain can be challenging. This will be a great resource to have in an emergency.”
