Cultural events were hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Black Hills Playhouse came up with an innovative plan to assure that the play would go on. A temporary outdoor performance space, dubbed the New Frontier Theater, was designed to keep audiences and artists safe.

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) provided a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to the Black Hills Playhouse. This grant provided partial support for the project assuring that professional theatre would continue during the summer at Custer State Park.

“Thanks to the support of our community, and funders like the South Dakota Community Foundation, the Black Hills Playhouse was able to return to the stage in Custer State Park in a new outdoor performance space called the New Frontier Theater”, stated Linda Anderson, Executive Director, Black Hills Playhouse. “Over 10,000 people enjoyed theatre in the new space which was designed to keep people and artists safe during the COVID pandemic. With the help of many, creativity and art found a way to prevail in uncertain times providing an opportunity for families to relax and enjoy theatre in the Hills”.

“The arts define who we are as people. They spur our creativity and imagination”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “During these trying times, the arts provide much needed relief for everyone”.
