Continuum of Care ExpansionNovember 22, 2021 // South Dakota Fund Grants
“We are pleased to partner with Abbott House and support their efforts to provide refuge and a place of healing for our state’s youth.”Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF
Abbott House remodeled an existing building in Mitchell resulting in the provision of a therapeutic foster home for six boys and four independent living apartments for young men aging out of the foster care system. The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded Abbott House with a $20,000 South Dakota Fund grant that will assist with completion of the outdoor family and recreation area for that facility.
“This gift will help us provide outdoor space for six very active young boys who live in the Ohitika foster home in Mitchell”, said Eric Klooz, Executive Director, Abbott House. “I look forward to seeing their smiling faces when they are playing basketball on their outdoor court.”
Recently, Abbott House expanded programming statewide to provide a continuum of care to youth who complete their treatment program but have no safe space to live. In 2020, Abbott House began a capital campaign to create a therapeutic foster home for boys in Mitchell. The three other therapeutic foster homes in Mitchell provide services for girls only.
“We are pleased to partner with Abbott House and support their efforts to provide refuge and a place of healing for our state’s youth”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “Abbott House has been there helping youth for 82 years.”
