“This generous gift from the South Dakota Community Foundation will greatly help us in our volunteer recruitment efforts”, said Chistina Oey, Development Director, Feeding South Dakota.

People have stepped up during this pandemic; but volunteers are still needed to ensure that needs are met. More volunteers are desperately needed for Feeding South Dakota’s mobile food program in Central South Dakota. Pierre has not had sufficient volunteers to cover all the needs for the Pierre center. The center offers several shifts that could fit any number of individuals.

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) was pleased to provide a $20,000 Coronavirus Response Fund grant to Feeding South Dakota to provide incentives for volunteers. A $25.00 Walmart gift card is provided for every four hours of volunteer work. While not all volunteers chose to participate in this incentive program, it may spark participation for some. This project is modeled after a successful program that was first implemented in the Black Hills.

“This generous gift from the South Dakota Community Foundation will greatly help us in our volunteer recruitment efforts”, said Chistina Oey, Development Director, Feeding South Dakota. “We are extremely grateful for their support of our mission to end hunger, especially during these trying times.”
“Food security remains a top concern during this pandemic”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “We don’t want anyone to be hungry.”

In response to the pandemic, SDCF’s Board of Directors established the Coronavirus Response Fund to directly support the needs of communities and nonprofits affected by COVID-19. This fund addresses immediate needs including access to food, shortage of volunteers, healthcare sector support and human services sector support. Donations are being accepted. If you would like to lend your support to those who continue to be impacted by this virus, or just learn more, please visit sdcommunityfoundation.org. Donations can be made on-line or checks may be directed to SDCF, PO Box 296, Pierre, SD 57501. One hundred percent of donations made to the SDCF Coronavirus Fund go directly to those in need throughout our state.
