Answering the Call

March 16, 2021 // South Dakota Fund Grants
Hurley

Like many of South Dakota’s Fire & Ambulance Services, the Hurley, SD Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Service is a 100% volunteer service providing coverage for the city of Hurley, residents of Turkey Ridge, one Colony and, in addition, assisting surrounding Departments on an as needed basis. They are a non-city owned nonprofit organization. Township and City funds account for approximately 25% of their total operating costs. In the past, fundraising efforts provided the remaining budgetary needs. Due to COVID, fund raising efforts in 2020 were pretty much non-existent. The cancellation of the Turner County Fair had a huge impact on the organization as that was their largest fundraising event.

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) was pleased to provide a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to this organization to help outfit four new members with the basic bunker gear (coat, pants, helmet, boots) necessary to comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and CDC guidelines.

“The Hurley Volunteer Fire Department greatly appreciates the opportunity to accept this grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation”, said Brad Georgeson, Fire Chief. “Due to COVID in 2020, we were not able to have some of our major fundraisers, which play a significant part in funding our insurance, daily operations and equipment funds. This grant will help us fill some voids from those lost fundraisers and help us look forward to a better 2021. Thank you, South Dakota Community Foundation.”

“Small towns are dependent upon volunteer organizations to be there in times of disaster”, said Ginger Niemann, Senior Program Officer, SDCF. “We are proud to play a small part in making sure there is someone there to answer the call when services are needed.”

In response to the pandemic, SDCF’s Board of Directors established the Coronavirus Response Fund to directly support the needs of communities and nonprofits affected by COVID-19. This fund addresses immediate needs including access to food, shortage of volunteers, healthcare sector support and human services sector support. Donations are being accepted. If you would like to lend your support to those who continue to be impacted by this virus, or just learn more, please visit sdcommunityfoundation.org. Donations can be made on-line or checks may be directed to SDCF, PO Box 296, Pierre, SD 57501. One hundred percent of donations made to the SDCF Coronavirus Fund go directly to those in need throughout our state.
