$50,000 Awarded to Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment

March 3, 2023 // Grants, Beyond Idea Grant Program

The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently presented a $50,000 Beyond Idea Grant (BIG) to the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment (CPCM). Offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, the BIG program supports innovative, community-based, problem-solving efforts.

“We are grateful for this exemplary and impactful investment in our CPCM. CPCM will now be able to expand its mission in building resilient communities, which are models for collective impact and sharing best practices to prevent traumatic and early adverse childhood experiences, such as child abuse and neglect,” said Haifa AbouSamra, Dean, USD School of Health Sciences

SD children face Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) that can lead to long-term social and health consequences. But what is knowable is preventable. BIG funding will support CPCM's “Resilient Communities: South Dakota” initiative. The initiative is a community-led, strengths-based approach to preventing ACES. Informed by the CDC, the state-specific, 5-stage process has been implemented in Coddington and Brookings Counties. Funding will expand the initiative and increase capacity of community members to prevent ACES for their children.

“Children are the future,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “SDCF is grateful for CPCM’s work to strengthen communities and protect children.”

A total of $1.2 million will be available to nonprofits in 2023 through the Beyond Idea Grant program. To learn more about funding opportunities offered by the SDCF, please visit our website at https://www.sdcommunityfoundation.org/
