$10,000 Awarded to support Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota
December 29, 2022 // South Dakota Fund Grants
The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to support the Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota as they complete the interior of their new facility.
“These dollars will greatly impact the lives of many women, children and families for years to come,” says Ashley Hobbs, Development Director, Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota. “We are very grateful for the support of the South Dakota Community Foundation. We would not be able to do the work we do without them.”

The Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota was established in 1984 as Mitchell Area Safehouse. The Mitchell Area Safehouse transitioned into Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota in 2021 to more accurately reflect the eight-county region served and to better convey that they are a resource for victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking, as well as advocates for these victims and healing families. The eight counties served are Davison, Aurora, Hanson, Sanborn, Douglas, Jerauld, Hutchinson, and Miner. In early 2023, the Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota will break ground on a new facility which will have more space and amenities to serve their clients in comfortable, safe surroundings.
“The Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota has come a long way in securing matching funding for their new facility,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “We’re glad to support them for their interior needs to protect so many fleeing from domestic violence.”
