Calendar Year 2006

The South Dakota Community Foundation awarded twenty-two grants in the first half of 2006 totaling $217,000. The Foundation received fifty-six applications, with requests totaling approximately $1,065,000.

The Foundation makes grant awards in the areas of economic development, human services, health, education and cultural programs. Grant applications are accepted anytime and awards are made within a 45-60 day time period. Following is a list of those awards and how the grant dollars will be used.

Areawide Business Council, Inc. (ABC), Yankton, SD - $20,000

Funds to be used to match an Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant for new business start-ups or expansions. It will assist in creating or saving at least 50 jobs in the region. The capitalization of this revolving loan fund will help ensure economic growth in an area of the state that will need assistance in the next two decades. It is contingent on the Areawide Business Council receiving the $500,000 grant from EDA.

Booth Society, Inc., Spearfish, SD - $7,500

Funds from this grant will assist with the establishment of a "Volunteer Village" within the nearby Spearfish public park. In this area, the Booth Society will establish an improved camping area to be used exclusively for hatchery volunteers. It is contingent on them raising one-half, or $58,000 for this project.

Byron Bible Camp, Huron, SD - $10,000

Funds will assist in the relocation and construction of a new bible camp located at Lake Byron, north of Huron. It is contingent on them raising $650,000 for this project.

Center for Civic Leadership & Participation, Rapid City, SD - $5,000

The Chiesman Center is facilitating a statewide summit for the South Dakota delegation to the Congressional Conference on Civic Education that will be attended by civic educators, civic leaders, and the general citizenry. Funds will assist with this summit.

Day County Arts Council, Webster, SD - $5,000

The Day County Arts Council is starting an endowment fund for operating needs. The earnings would support the ongoing expenses of the Day County Arts Council. The grant is contingent upon the Day County Arts Council raising $25,000 for a permanently endowed fund at the South Dakota Community Foundation.

Girl Scouts of the Black Hills Council, Rapid City, SD - $10,000

Financial support to help facilitate the expansion of Girls' Circle onto three reservations, Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River and Rosebud. The Girls' Circle is an outreach program developed by the Black Hills Council based on empowerment and confidence-building activities for teen and pre-teen girls.

Langford Development Corporation, Langford, SD - $15,000

Matching funds to be part of a $100,000 initiative that would capitalize a revolving loan fund for affordable housing and business development.

Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota, Inc., Sioux Falls, SD - $10,000

Lutherans Outdoors has been given a 92-acre lakefront property near Watertown for the development of a retreat center. This facility will serve the special purpose of being fully accessible to individuals with disabilities. Lutherans Outdoors plans to open the facility, called Joy Ranch, in 2008. Funds will assist in funding the program development that would be offered at Joy Ranch.

Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village Preservation Society, Mitchell, SD - $8,000

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village Preservation Society exists to support and preserve the National Historic Landmark located on the north edge of Mitchell. The newest project is called "Journey of Discovery". The new display will include an interactive exhibit that takes visitors on a series of virtual journeys. The grant is contingent on them raising $4,000.

Sioux Council Boy Scouts of America, Sioux Falls, SD - $10,000

Matching funds will be used to help with the construction of Cub Scout Adventure World. This facility is near Canton and will be used exclusively by Cub Scouts. They must raise $1,950,000.

South Dakota 4-H Foundation, Brookings, SD - $10,000

Funds to assist a program that will involve 25-20 selected high school sophomores and juniors who exhibit leadership potential, in a 12-month interactive leadership academy designed to help them envision careers and futures in South Dakota.

South Dakota Counselors to Small Business (SDCSB), Sioux Falls, SD - $7,500

The South Dakota Counselors to Small Business (SDCSB) organization administers the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) program in South Dakota. This grant will assist the SDCSB to develop the infrastructure and systems for expanding this program into additional rural areas across South Dakota.

South Dakota General Convention of Young Men's Christian Association Inc., Dupree, SD - $5,000
Matching funds will help to purchase a 14 passenger bus with lift and roll kit. The grant is contingent on them raising the other $5,000 necessary to meet the South Dakota Department of Transportation match.

South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial Fund, Pierre, SD - $10,000

Funds to assist with the Vietnam War Memorial project.

Storybook Island, Inc., Rapid City, SD - $7,500

Storybook Island is a charitable, nonprofit corporation that operates a free children's park. Funds will assist in the purchase of an electrical system upgrade.

Sturgis Public Library, Sturgis, SD - $10,000

The Sturgis Public Library serves the needs of the community of Sturgis, and also Piedmont, Whitewood and Stagebarn. In addition, they contract with the Meade School District to provide library services at 2 elementary schools in Sturgis and the rural elementary locations in Enning, Union Center and Opal. Finally, they also serve the library needs of rural Meade County with a bookmobile. This grant will assist in the purchase of furnishings and technology to complete this library expansion project.

Teen Initiative, Wagner, SD - $14,000

Funds will assist the Teen Initiative program. This program steers teenagers toward a focus on career and educational development, improved employability, leadership skills, and healthy lifestyle choices.

The Plankinton Preservation Society, Plankinton, SD - $10,000

The Plankinton Preservation Society has received a $390,000 grant from the South Dakota Department of Transportation for this project. These are federal dollars that are allocated by SDDOT. This grant will be matching funds to finish a collection of railroad memorabilia to be added to the historic Sweep/VanDyke Hotel. It is contingent on the Plankinton Preservation Society raising $77,000 by July 1, 2007.

Tiny Tigers Community Daycare, Ipswich, SD - $5,000

This is a Governor's Daycare facility in Ipswich, SD. It is the only licensed child care center in Edmunds County. The grant will help defray the costs of setting up the community daycare, including a concrete foundation, entryway, handicapped accessible ramp, and utility hookups.

Webster Area Development Corporation, Webster, SD - $20,000

The Webster Area Development Corporation, in partnership with the Day County Champion Community, will receive funds to enhance community and economic development in the areas of value-added agriculture, housing, wind energy, and business assistance. It is contingent on them raising the other $100,000 needed.

Western Resources for dis-ABLED Independence, Rapid City, SD - $5,000

One time award to assist the program called, "Living Well with a Disability. The curriculum includes peer support activities, exercise activities, healthy cooking classes, gardening, and exercise and healthy living programs.
